What really happens during sleep

While you sleep, your brain cleanses itself. Metabolic waste products are removed. Hormones are regulated. Memories are consolidated. Tissue is repaired. These processes occur exclusively during sleep—and cannot be repeated.

Sleep deprivation accumulates. Those who sleep too little for weeks lose the ability to perceive their own impairment.

Actively shaping sleep

In Ayurveda, sleep is not a passive activity. It is actively prepared for through rituals, scents, temperature, light, daily structure — and through the conscious letting go of stimuli and thoughts.
