Do I need to use a thermometer to mix the color before applying?

Yes! The thermometer helps you determine the water temperature, and thereby, your color result more accurately.
The hotter you mix our shades, the more reddish tones they will produce. If you want an ashy shade, you should choose a temperature between 122°F and 140°F. All red shades can be mixed at 176°F.
